Autism Level 2 Communication & Engagement

 

Wherever possible with our online training courses we have a guest speaker who is an expert by experience

 

Aim

A training session to increase knowledge and understanding of autism and build and expand on topics covered in previous autism courses.

 

Target group

This course is relevant for everyone who knows and/or supports a person on the autism spectrum, including families, support workers, teachers and other relevant health and social care professionals.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the diagnostic criteria for autism
  • Identify augmentative and alternative communication tools
  • Identify how to communicate with different individuals on the autistic spectrum including non-verbal communication, how do we understand individuals routines, what they may be feeling and causes of meltdowns
  • Identify the Spell framework and look at ways of working with and engaging with individuals on the autistic spectrum, identifying ways in which we can be flexible in the way we offer support
  • Demonstrate how to write a social story
  • Describe the process of sensory integration including the difference between hyper and hypo sensitivity

 

Training Methods

The day will be run in a participative way, using delegates’ existing knowledge as a platform. Training methods will include paired work, small group work, quizzes, multi-media clips, case studies, and a limited amount of lecturing.

 

Exercises and activities will be designed to meet the varied learning needs of the participants.
