Dementia Awareness

 

Aims

A training session to introduce participants to the basic concepts and ideas important in working with people with dementia. To give participants the tools to work more confidently and effectively with people with dementia.

 

Target Group

This training is designed to be delivered to all staff working with and supporting people with dementia.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the main features of dementia
  • Identify the different types of dementia
  • Identify the lobes of the brain and recognise how damage to different areas may have an impact on a person with dementia
  • Describe the importance of person centred care in working with people with dementia
  • Identify strategies for working effectively with people with dementia
  • Describe the importance of working in a way that improves communication with people with dementia by validating emotions and feelings

 

Training Methods

The day will be run in a participative way, using delegates’ existing knowledge as a platform. Training methods will include paired work, small group work, quizzes, multi-media clips, case studies, and a limited amount of lecturing.
