Learning Disabilities & Mental Health

 

Aims

A training course to give participants an opportunity to understand how mental health issues may be experienced by people with learning disabilities.

 

Target group

All people supporting adults with learning disabilities.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course participants will:

  • Idenify the difference between mental health and learning disabilities
  • Identify different types of mental illness including depression, anxiety, bi-polar and schizophrenia, and identify how they may present differently in people with learning disabilities
  • Identify why people with learning disabilities are more vulnerable to mental illness
  • Identify the difficulties of mental health assessment for people with learning disabilities
  • Describe various interventions to support people that have a learning disability as well as a mental illness

 

Training methods

The day will be run in a participative way, using delegates’ existing knowledge as a platform. Training methods will include paired work, small group work, quizzes, multi-media clips, case studies, and a limited amount of lecturing.

Exercises and activities will be designed to meet the varied learning needs of the participants.
