Mental Health in Learning Disabilities

 

 

Aims

A training course to give participants an opportunity to understand how mental health issues may be experienced by people with learning disabilities.

 

Target group

All people supporting adults with learning disabilities.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the difference between mental health and learning disabilities
  • Define the terms mental illness and mental wellbeing
  • Identify why people with learning disabilities may be more vulnerable to mental  health issues  
  • Describe various mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar, and dementia and how these may present differently in people with learning disabilities.
  • Describe the difficulties of assessment of mental health in people with learning disabilities and recognise what they can do to support the person

 

Training methods

The day will be run in a participative way, using delegates’ existing knowledge as a platform. Training methods will include paired work, small group work, quizzes, multi-media clips, case studies, and a limited amount of lecturing.

 

Exercises and activities will be designed to meet the varied learning needs of the participants.
