Aims
A training session to introduce participants to the key concepts of working with people that may
become violent or aggressive. To develop participants’ understanding of the main issues involved in this work, and to give them the tools to work more confidently and effectively to diffuse violence
and aggression and to maintain personal safety.

Group
This training is designed to be delivered to staff working in health and social care services, across statutory services,
and the voluntary, independent and private sectors.
Learning
outcomes
At the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Define the terms violence and
aggression
- Recognise the process of fight or
flight
- Describe theories of violence and
aggression
- Describe the continuum of violence and identify the things
that may sustain violence and aggression
- Describe the stages of emotional arousal and recognise what
to do at each stage
- Demonstrate how to use our own body reactions and behaviour
to deal with violence and aggression
- Understand the need for clear communication and a consistent
approach when dealing with violence and aggression
- Identify several strategies for working with violence and
aggression including: the use of ABC charts, validation and the Deliver Care model
Training
Methods
The day will be run in a participative way, using delegates’ existing knowledge as a platform. Training methods will include
paired work, small group work, quizzes, multi-media clips, case studies, and a limited amount of lecturing.
